I could easily extend this Jonah series into two to four more sermons! But we’re beginning to wind down, entering the final stretch of this journey with Jonah. This week, we take a closer look at Jonah’s prayer. Something to notice (if you haven’t already): Jonah prays for the first time in the story only after he’s been swallowed up.

He didn’t pray when God called him to go to Nineveh.

He didn’t pray when the sailors urged him to call on his God (at least, the text doesn’t say he did).

He didn’t pray while the storm raged.

Did he pray while sinking beneath the waves?

We know he prays from inside the fish.

I actually find it hard to believe Jonah hadn’t prayed up to this point. He’s a prophet. A man of God. Surely he prayed, right? He was silent toward God.

Sometimes silence isn’t peace.

Sometimes silence is resistance.

This Sabbath, we’ll explore what it means to become the “prayerless prophet”—and what it takes for God to bring us back to prayer.

Join us as we continue the journey.
