The stories of Abraham are fascinating if you slow down and pay attention to what’s going on. He is not treated like a villain by any means, but many of the chapters of his life record a man struggling to tell the truth, find courage when challenges arise, and managing his relationships with the dexterity of a drunken sailor - but through it all slowly learning the lessons God was teaching him - mostly about who this God really is and how He cares for us.
One of those lessons was the fact that YHWH is unique - he doesn’t need Abraham to do things for him, in fact over and over God steps in and cares for him even when the trouble was self-caused. In the most challenging times, like so many other Bible characters, God showed up and made up the difference. Even when it was Abraham’s own fault - YHWH still took responsibility to be his provider and protector.
How do we understand our relationship to God and His care for us? Do we need to behave for God to be our shepherd? If we are struggling does that mean we have somehow chased off our God and His care? This sabbath we’re diving into those deep waters we all swim in so we can learn from Abraham what His God is like and how we can walk with Him too. We can’t wait to see you!
