“And when I saw the deer pass right in front of my kitchen window, that’s how I just KNEW for SURE that God was speaking right to ME!” The speaker explained, emphatically.
And I should have believed her. I should have rejoiced with her over this moment she had discerned God’s voice. But instead? I doubted her: A deer? Really! That’s how she heard God’s voice? That’s how she understood His will? A deer was the moment it all became clear? It seemed too ordinary, too silly, and too subjective to me. We can’t just go around making life choices based on random wildlife passing in front of our path! We need something solid, something clear, something which absolutely marks the real and true voice of God….don’t we…..?
What does it sound like when God calls someone? How can we know if it’s really God leading us to do something, or if it’s merely our own desires, whims, and interpretations of reality? These aren’t Bible times, and God’s not speaking through the burning bush anymore. So how IS He speaking? And how can we listen?
Join us this Sabbath as we wrestle with the idea of hearing and discerning God’s calling and God’s voice. Two pastors and two ministry interns will share how we’ve learned to hear what God is asking us to do, and how that translates to your own life: Most of us already have vocations, hobbies, service outlets, and meaningful connections…So what more might God be calling us to?
